Plastic Reduction Strategy

In 2019, Glasgow City Council launched its Plastics Reduction Strategy and Action Plan, driven by concerns over the harmful impact plastic is having on the natural world. The Strategy aims to prevent and reduce the amount of plastic used and then disposed of in Glasgow. With a direct focus on reducing the consumption of single use plastics; the Action Plan aims to provide a short-term, targeted approach to city-wide action. It focuses on the behaviours of a range of stakeholders including the Council, private and public sector and the public.

The Plastic Reduction Strategy and Action Plan is reported annually to Committee. The last update can be found here.

The long-term objective of the strategy is to prevent the use of single-use plastic where this can be avoided, or an alternative reusable version of the plastic item exists. With that mind, the Plastic Reduction Strategy and Action plan has been reviewed and integrated to the Circular Economy Route Map for Glasgow 20205-2030.

Actions to reduce plastic pollution and single use plastics form a key part of Glasgow's journey to a become circular city. This integration allows us to align engagement, communication, and the overall messaging on plastic reduction with relevant approaches in circular economy, such as eliminating waste, reusing, sharing and others.

Moving forward, the progress on actions to reduce plastic will be reported through the Circular Economy Route Map.
