Road Hauliers Gather in Glasgow for Low Emission Zone Event

Delegates were warmly welcomed at The Lighthouse where they had the chance to hear from and engage with a wide range of speakers about Glasgow's LEZ which is the first to be introduced in Scotland.

Councillor Anna Richardson, City Convener for Sustainability and Carbon Reduction said; "Whilst it's not until the end of 2022 that the strict emission standards required of Glasgow's LEZ will apply to all vehicles, it's critical that we connect with bodies such as the RHA to raise awareness early and ensure that businesses have time to prepare.

"Events such as the one we've hosted today, are vitally important; not only as a source of information for affected stakeholders but also to ensure there's an opportunity for meaningful engagement and a platform available for their voices to be heard.

"It's key that as we look to expand the reach of the LEZ to all vehicles, that all those potentially affected are aware of its scope and have the chance to plan ahead. We're committed to increasing stakeholder consciousness of our LEZ and to support this we'll be continuing with our programme of publicity, public engagement and events over the coming months."

Martin Reid, RHA Policy Director for Scotland and Northern Ireland said; "On behalf of the RHA and its members we thank Glasgow City Council for putting on this event today.

"It's vital that any LEZ's allow for free movement of goods and that those delivering them are given adequate time to meet the required standards. We are grateful that Glasgow City Council have listened to industry."

Glasgow's Low Emission Zone took effect on 31 December 2018 and is being introduced in phases. The LEZ presently only affects local service buses however by the end of 2022, all vehicles wishing to enter the LEZ must meet the strict exhaust emission requirements.

Glasgow's LEZ is expected to reduce pollution from road traffic and improve air quality, making our city centre a much more pleasant place to live, work and visit.
