Adopt a child - What is Adoption?

Adoption is a way of providing new families for children who cannot be brought up by their birth parents. Adoption is a legal process, which involves a court transferring all rights and responsibilities of the birth parents to adoptive parents.

Most children being placed for adoption have spent some time living with their birth parents or extended family, prior to coming to live with foster carers. There are many different reasons why children are unable to live with their birth families and adoption will only be considered once all attempts to support a child to return to their family's care have been exhausted.

Why adopt with Glasgow?

We believe that adoption is one of the best outcomes for children who cannot be cared for by their own birth families. Glasgow has extensive experience in placing children for adoption. We have our own dedicated learning and development team to assist with helping families, along with a commitment to providing post adoption support should Glasgow families need it.

Who can adopt?

Prospective adoptive parents must have the ability to offer a stable, loving home to a child or children who, for whatever reason, are unable to remain with their own family. Glasgow is a diverse city and we welcome enquiries from adoptive parents that are representative of this. We are keen to hear from adoptive parents who could care for older children, children with complex needs and sibling groups.

What is the criteria for adoption?

We welcome applications from single people, gay, couples, married or in a stable relationship.  Guidance is that partners must have been living together for at least two years.

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age to apply.

We are unable to accept applications if you are undergoing infertility treatment or on a waiting list for treatment. We will seek health information (medical) where issues such as weight, smoking, mental health will be considered. We are unable to accept applications to adopt if you smoke. You will need to be smoke free for a minimum of 12 months before we could accept an application to adopt.

We welcome enquiries from families who have children of their own.

How do I become an adoptive parent?

We need adoptive parents to make a commitment to a child for the rest of their childhood and beyond.

If you think you might have what it takes or have any questions, please phone and speak to a member of our friendly recruitment team.

Adopting a Step Child

When families come together and a new blended family is formed, adults often give a great deal of thought about how to strengthen the ties and give the children as much security as possible through step-parent adoption.
