Connecting Woodside

Formerly known as Woodside Mini-Holland this is an area wide active travel project which is a first of its kind in Scotland. The project bid navigated a 3 stage judging process with Glasgow being successful in achieving funding.

The project is considered as having four main elements:

  • Place - Environmental enhancements making the area an attractive place to live and visit.
  • Segregated cycle tracks - Safe cycle routes and excellent public transport integration.
  • Permeability and connectivity - Improved walking opportunities and attractive pedestrian links.
  • Outreach work - At least 5% of the project budget will be allocated for outreach activities aimed at encouraging active and sustainable travel.

St George's Road

The provision of dedicated, separated cycle infrastructure on St George's Road will connect Sauchiehall Street Avenue and the City Centre to the existing Garscube Road cycle segregation, Claypits nature reserve and the Forth and Clyde Canal. This cycle facility will also provide a direct, safe and inclusive connection for the communities of Woodside and Woodlands whilst supporting travel options for the recent regeneration of the communities of Hamiltonhill, Sighthill and Port Dundas.

New cycle facilities on St George's Road will also see direct and safe connections between the proposed Quietway routes on North Woodside Road, Braid Street, West Princes Street and also the future "Underline" route at New City Road being delivered as part of the City Centre Avenues programme. 

St George's Road Consultation History

The Connecting Woodside project team have previously consulted on concept proposals for the introduction of a segregated cycle track on St George's Road. Please find the consultation reports below for the following engagement exercises. 

As the St George's Road phase of the Connecting Woodside project has seen delays due to the impact of the global pandemic and structural issues at the Woodside Viaduct on the M8, the project team have made the decision to undertake a consultation exercise for the full length of the proposed route to allow comments to be received on the current concept design.

Charing Cross

Glasgow City Council, working in partnership with Sustrans, Transport Scotland and Amey Highways are about to commence essential major road works that will affect traffic flow in the Charing Cross area of the city.

These works are being undertaken to enable Transport Scotland and their contractor, Amey Highways, to renew the waterproofing of the M8 underpass structure at Junction 18, along with an upgrade of the surrounding parapets. Once these works are completed, Glasgow City Council, in partnership with Sustrans, will use this opportunity to undertake walking and cycling enhancements at this location. In addition to this the Council will upgrade the traffic signals also, improving the functionality and safety of the junction for all as part of the Connecting Woodside project.

The works are scheduled to commence on Monday 8 July 2024 with completion expected by Monday 2 December 2024. 

Charing Cross Update 30 October:

We can confirm that the Transport Scotland/Amey Highways works to renew the waterproofing of the M8 underpass structure have now been completed in line with the Programme. There are still parapet replacement works being undertaken on St George's Road and the junction 18 M8 off slip which are scheduled for completion by January 2025, however these works will have no impact on the overall junction works being completed for the 2 December.  

The main works site has now been handed over to Glasgow City Council and the works to upgrade the traffic signals and introduce walking and cycling enhancements at the junction are progressing as programmed.

The next phase of these works will see the installation of new tactile paving / pedestrian crossings and traffic signals infrastructure along with natural stone footways at the corner of St George's Road and Woodlands Road. To undertake these works safely, there is a requirement to utilise temporary traffic signals on Woodlands Road and North Street and introduce a temporary pedestrian crossing point on Woodlands Road approximately 15m to the north of the existing crossing point outside the "Meow" cat café.

These temporary traffic signals will remain in place until the junction works are completed, with a switch over to the new full permanent traffic signals arrangement during the weekend of the 30 November and 1 December.

Charing Cross Update 22 November:

The following sections of road will see short term closures to undertake essential resurfacing works during week commencing 25 November 2024.

Woodlands Road southbound:

  • Works will commence on Tuesday 26 November 2024 from 06:00 until 20:00, All traffic to use the diversion route below.

Woodlands Road to City Centre/M8 W/B:

  1. Woodlands Road, Park Road, Great Western Road, Junction 17 M8 on-slip for W/B M8 traffic and traffic for the City Centre to take the Junction 18 M8 off slip to Charing Cross.
  1. Woodlands Road, St George's Road, Maryhill Road, Napiershall Street, Great Western Road, Junction 17 M8 on-slip for W/B M8 traffic and traffic for the City Centre to take the Junction 18 M8 off slip to Charing Cross.

Junction 18 M8 off slip:

  • Works will commence on Tuesday 26 November 2024 at 21:00 until Wednesday 27 November at 15:00. All traffic to use the diversion route below.

West Graham Street to City Centre/M8 W/B:

  1. West Graham Street, Garscube Road, St George's Road, Great Western Road, Park Road, Woodlands Road, North Street, Sauchiehall Street. For W/B M8 traffic continue on the A804 Newton Street.
  1. Exit M8 at Junction 19, Argyle Street, North Street, Sauchiehall Street.  

 

Diversion routes

The section of Charing Cross between Woodlands Road/St George's Road and Sauchiehall Street will be closed for the duration of the works. Further details are listed below.

  • St George's Road westbound: local access only from West Princes Street/J17 M8 off slip. No through traffic to Charing Cross or J18 M8 on slip.
  • St George's Road eastbound: One lane of traffic will be maintained for the duration of the works.
  • Woodlands Road southbound: Traffic to use a contraflow system on North Street to access Sauchiehall Street/Newton Street.
  • Woodlands Road northbound: One lane of traffic will be maintained for the duration of the works.
  • North Street: One lane of two-way traffic in either direction for the duration of the works. Southbound traffic to use a contraflow system to access Sauchiehall Street/Newton Street.
  • Junction 18 M8 on slip: Closed for the duration of the works.
  • Junction 18 M8 off slip: One lane of traffic will be maintained for the duration of the works.

Traffic access will be restricted at the points shown above to allow the works to be completed safely and efficiently, minimising the impact to the surrounding traffic network. The works are anticipated to take approximately 21 weeks to complete, however this is dependent on weather conditions.

Once complete these works will form part of the wider St George's Road works undertaken as part of the Connecting Woodside project and will provide a direct connection between existing cycle facilities on Sauchiehall Street and Garscube Road. Raeberry Street

Raeberry Street quietway proposes to break down the barriers to active travel by providing a low traffic route with increased visibility for those that are less comfortable on busy routes and wish to travel at a gentler pace that is inviting to all users with varying abilities.

The quietway will offer better crossing facilities, larger footway areas, enhanced green spaces and active travel connectivity that's accessible to all.

North Woodside Road / Maryhill Road Junction

The enhancement works to improve the junction of North Woodside Road and Maryhill Road for those walking and cycling have now been completed. These works included the installation of new signalised pedestrian and cycle crossings, along with the reallocation of carriageway space to introduce soft landscaping on North Woodside Road. The project also saw the removal of railings to allow ease of access to green space, a relocation of recycling facilities and the introduction of cycle parking.  The improvements to this junction facilitate safer and easier connectivity for those walking and cycling throughout the Woodside area, and beyond.
