Rostov-On-Don, Russia

Rostov-on-Don has a population of 1,100,000 and is the capital of southern Russia. It forms a natural gateway to the Caucasus and the Black Sea and since the collapse of the Soviet Union has become an increasingly important business and administrative centre. Glasgow has been twinned with Rostov since 1986. Recently Glasgow has hosted an increasing number of delegations from Rostov who come to the city seeking to exchange knowledge across a range of areas.

Gymnastics Project

The partnership between Rostov Olympic Reserve School and Glasgow School of Sport will enter its 10th year in 2017. Originally initiated to prepare Glasgow and Scotland's most talented gymnasts for selection to the 2014 Commonwealth Games Squad by providing the opportunities for coaches and gymnasts to learn from the best in the world. This programme has undoubtedly been a resounding success with many of the gymnasts who travelled to Russian to live on site and train at this prestigious school being selected to the 2014 squad.

This partnership will change focus in that it will concentrate on coaching development and there will be two visits in 2017.

Education

  • Exchange between School 36

The Russian Cultural Centre and Stephen Foster (The World Through Wooden Eyes) have been working with School 65 in Rostov on Don to develop a project with Glasgow and Rostov schools through the use of puppets. They will also work on developing a Charles Rennie McIntosh inspired project.

  • Glasgow Kelvin College               

Ongoing partnership with Rostov State University develop exchanges with staff and students.

Students from Rostov-on-Don spend 4 weeks at Glasgow Kelvin and Glasgow City Council. Programme based on their course work. Planning and Urban Development. Both educational establishments are looking to develop other areas of partnership.

Royal Conservatoire of Scotland / Rostov Conservatoire

RCS recently received €120,000 ERASMUS funding to develop projects and partnerships between both organisations over a 3 year period. There will be a number of staff and student mobilities between both cities. Students will have the opportunity to spend up to 3 months in each city learning from top class tutors and master classes.
