Glasgow Women of Enterprise

Glasgow has proudly declared itself the UK's First Feminist City, a commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable urban environment. But long before this title, women were already shaping the city's economy in ways that are often overlooked.

This storymap takes you on a journey through 19th-century Glasgow, uncovering the stories of women who played a vital role as independent economic agents—owning businesses, managing enterprises, and contributing to the city's commercial vibrancy.  Drawing from research on The Entrepreneurs that Made Glasgow: 1861-1901, we invite you to step back in time and explore the hidden histories of the women who helped build the city we know today.
