What is Arts in the City (AITC)?

AITC is a Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership project designed to support and improve access to arts and culture opportunities for individuals with lived experience of care. The project's Development Worker works in partnership with young people, social work and third sector organisations to promote the benefits of creative participation and self-expression.

AITC's Mission Statement and Long-term Goals

Mission Statement

At Arts in the City, we know just how impactful participation in creative and cultural activity can be. Our project - funded by Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership - exists to improve access to arts and culture opportunities for individuals with lived experience of care.

We do this by identifying, challenging and alleviating barriers (social, emotional, economic, systemic, etc.) for participation; working in partnership with third sector arts and culture organisations; creating bespoke activities; and, acting as a key signpost between organisations, our young people and those who care for them.

Long-term Goals

AITC is working towards three long-term goals. These are to:

  • provide every young person with accessible and meaningful opportunities to engage with creativity and culture
  • support third sector organisations and increase sustainability of opportunities provided
  • recognise and promote the value of participation in creative and cultural activity for mental health and personal development

How can I participate in AITC?

There are many opportunities for you to get involved with AITC. Below you'll find information on specific opportunities for young people, carers, social workers and HSCP staff, and third sector arts/culture organisations.

For young people

There are lots of ways that you can participate in arts and culture through AITC. We also want to make sure that AITC supports you in the ways you'd like to be supported, so are looking to talk to young people about how AITC can do this better. Here are some ways you can get involved:

  • Get in touch with Arts in the City's Development Worker and let them know about the types of activities you're interested in. They will support you to find opportunities that might be relevant for you
  • There are opportunities to volunteer, speak and perform at our upcoming October Open Day. Please contact the Development Worker to find out more
  • Join the AITC Committee alongside other young people to have your voice heard about what opportunities you would like to see. Please email the Development Worker if you would like to be involved

For carers

Participating in creative activities can be very impactful for our young people. AITC wants to support carers to engage in creative and cultural opportunities alongside young people. Here are some ways we can help you to do so:

  • Ask to be added to Arts in the City's mailing list by contacting the Development Worker
  • Get in touch with the Development Worker for ideas of how you can get creative at home, or for advice on relevant referral pathways for a young person you support

For social workers and HSCP staff

We want to ensure that all HSCP are aware of available creative and cultural opportunities. Here are some ways you can support AITC to promote arts/culture opportunities for young people:

  • Ask to be added to the Arts in the City mailing list by contacting the Development Worker. You will received occasional updates about current opportunities. Please share these opportunities with young people you are supporting
  • Contact Arts in the City's Development Worker and ask to join our ART-vocates group
  • Arrange for the Development Worker to provide an input at your team meeting to learn more about the benefits of creative participation

For third sector arts organisations

Arts in the City works with a variety of third sector arts and culture organisations. Our project provision would not be possible without them! If you are an organisational worker, here are some ways you can get involved:

  • Email Arts in the City's Development Worker to have your projects, workshops and activities added to our quarterly newsletter which will be uploaded to this page
  • Join our Arts in the City Partners' Group who meet quarterly to discuss sector wide developments and share updates. Please contact the Development Worker for information about our next Partners' Day
