Cowcaddens Road Emergency Repairs
Sinkhole and Associated Remedial Works
A sinkhole has been discovered beneath Cowcaddens Road, west of Hope Street, during recent excavation works (see following photo).

This is a Scottish Water matter and is not related to the works being undertaken as part of the Avenues Plus Project at this location.
Scottish Water are carrying out emergency works to resolve this issue and have implemented Traffic Management on Sunday night, 23 March 2025, conducted mobilisation on Monday, 24 March 2025 allowing repair works to commence on Tuesday, 25 March 2025.
The Traffic Management comprises of a three-lane closure of Cowcaddens Road between Cambridge Street and Port Dundas Road.
- This results in an unavoidable total westbound closure with only one eastbound lane remaining operational.
- Hope Street will also be reduced to one lane, where traffic will only be permitted to turn right (east) onto Cowcaddens Road.
- Pedestrians (westbound) will be required to be diverted via Hope Street - Renfrew Street - Cambridge Street, with eastbound pedestrians following the same route in reverse.
- The pedestrian crossing points at Hope Street will be maintained.
- The proposed diversions are shown in the attached layout.
As of 24 March 2025, Scottish Water are in an investigation and assessment phase, as the full extent of the issue can only be determined once further excavation by Scottish Water's partnering contractor (Clancy) has been undertaken. An indicative timescale to complete the work is estimated at four weeks at this stage, however this could reduce or increase in length depending on further investigation work.
To minimise any delays and cost to the Avenues Plus Project, the Council's contractor (Wills Bros) has been temporarily relocated to another site at Dobbies Loan until Scottish Water completes their works.
Scottish Water will be providing updates on the situation through social media channels and on its official website.
Any further queries regarding this matter should be directed to Scottish Water.
