Glasgow's support for Ukraine efforts

Published: 10 March 2022

Glasgow councillors have agreed to support a donation of £20,000 the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) to help fund its members UK-based activities in response to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

The DEC - made up of 15 aid-based organisations that come together at times of emergencies to offer humanitarian aid to those in need - launched the emergency appeal in recognition of the considerable additional strain placed on the resources of UK based charities by the crisis in Ukraine.

As well as the donation, the council will continue to work with partners to promote the appeal to as wide an audience as possible and engage with organisations who are supporting the humanitarian efforts across the work to help the people caught in the war and displaced to other countries.

Latest figures from the DEC estimate that almost 2 million people have fled their homes to escape the conflict.

Martin Booth, the council's Executive Director of Finance has said that officers also continue to liaise with those holding daily vigils in George Square and groups looking for collecting and distribution sites to aid the relief efforts.

He said: "The £20,000 donation will go to DEC to help the UK-based activities of the charities involved in the emergency appeal and in recognition of the considerable strain the crisis in Ukraine is placing on the resources of these charities."

Officers have also had discussions with the relevant UK and Scottish authorities on supporting efforts to resettle refugees.
