Active Travel Boost for North East of the City
Published: 17 July 2020
Overview
The north east of the city is set to benefit from new cycle lanes, with work due to start this week on Cumbernauld Road.
The pop-up lanes will be installed as part of our Spaces for People programme, which is providing additional space for physical distancing to protect public health and suppress a resurgence of COVID-19.
Stretching from Station Road to Provanmill Road, these latest pop-ups will run across both sides of Cumbernauld Road and will benefit from soft segregation.
These temporary measures, brought about by converting existing advisory cycle lanes into mandatory ones, aims to increase the practicality and attractiveness of active travel for both leisure and commuting as lockdown restrictions ease.
Advanced lining works have already commenced on site.
Councillor Anna Richardson, City Convener for Sustainability and Carbon Reduction, has welcomed the creation of these new strategic cycle lanes, saying: "I'm delighted that these new pop-up cycle lanes will become ready for use very soon. COVID-19 has not gone away and so we're moving at pace as part of our Spaces for People programme to provide reassurance that people can move around their neighbourhoods safely".
Supported by £3.5m funding from the Scottish Government and administered by Sustrans Scotland, Spaces for People will see temporary infrastructure measures introduced across Glasgow to provide extra space for people to walk, wheel or cycle as COVID-19 restrictions remain in place.
All current access (both public and private) along the route shall be maintained, with work due for completion by 20 August 2020.
