What is an Emergency Centre ?

When a major incident occurs that results in people being displaced from their homes, Police Scotland alert the Council Incident Officer who will arrange for the opening of an Emergency Centre.

This will be in a building which can provide shelter and facilities for dealing with the needs of displaced people and would usually be a council owned building, such as a Secondary School, Sports Hall or other public building.  However, arrangements have been made in some areas of the city to use suitable locations which are not owned by us.

There is no one particular building earmarked for use in a specific area, and the choice of Emergency Centre location will be taken by the Council Incident Officer dealing with the incident. They will make the decision based on the number of people to be accommodated and the projected length of time that the building will be required, and its normal day to day use has been taken into account.
