Job Evaluation - Call for volunteer Benchmark Job Holders - November 2021

JE update

Job Evaluation - Call for volunteer Benchmark Job Holders

Over 450 staff have now taken part in job evaluation interviews or are part way through the process and many more staff have also volunteered. The current cohort of benchmark job interviews is nearing completion and the Job Evaluation Operational Steering Group which includes the trade unions, has agreed on the next benchmark jobs that we now want to invite for interviews.

If your job is listed below and you've not already been asked to volunteer by your line manager, then you can volunteer by emailing the job evaluation team at JE-SUPPORT@glasgow.gov.uk You should include the BM Ref number from the table below and you should advise your line manager that you have volunteered.

Interviews are still mainly conducted remotely on MS Teams, however, if you don't have this facility, you can still volunteer to participate and the Job Analyst Team will discuss with you the best way to conduct your interview.  To take part, you must have been in the same job for at least two years and be willing to talk about your job, complete a questionnaire and review a job outcome document which follows the interview and is a record of the outcome of the job evaluation.

It is important that a representative sample of job holders are interviewed for each Benchmark Job, this may mean that if a high number of staff volunteer then not everyone will be selected for interview, this will not have an adverse effect on the Job Evaluation process.

Questions and answers

What's involved in preparing for an online interview?

Volunteers will be invited to contact a member of the Job Evaluation Team who will explain the process and answer any questions. Benchmark job holders and their line managers will then be invited to view a session on MS Teams including a demonstration of the electronic questionnaire.  Volunteers may invite their trade union representative or a colleague to accompany them to the briefing session.

Volunteers will be asked to complete an online questionnaire over the following two weeks which is set out under the 13 factor headings of the job evaluation scheme.

Who will carry out the interviews?

Once the completed questionnaire is received by the Job Analyst Team the job holder will be invited to take part in an online interview of around half a day. Interviews will be carried out by trained job analysts and information will be captured using an electronic questionnaire called Gauge+, the same questionnaire is used for everyone.

What does the interview involve?

The structure for the interview is provided by the 13 factors of the JE Scheme and key information about the demands of the job will be recorded using an electronic questionnaire. The job analyst will go through the electronic questionnaire, referring to the questionnaire staff have completed beforehand. Staff can also share any other supporting documents they feel are relevant to explaining their job.

When will the interviews take place?

Interviews will either take place during normal office working hours (in which case you will be given the time off work to attend) or if you don't work normal office hours then individual arrangements will be made to enable you to attend these events.

How long will an interview take?

The length of interviews varies, but are usually concluded within a single day.  The duration it does depend on making sure that the right information is captured and that the job holder and job analyst are satisfied that this has been done. Some more complex jobs could take a bit longer. Interviews conducted via MS Teams will include regular comfort breaks and may be arranged over multiple sessions.

What if a job holder does not have ICT facilities to participate in a remote interview?

Not all benchmark job holders will have council issued ICT that will allow them to participate in an online interview.  If possible, facilities within the job holder's service will be utilised to support participation in an online remote interview.  If this is not possible, ICT facilities are available at the three job evaluation hubs to support job holders in an onsite remote interview.

Who can attend the interview?

A work colleague or a Trade Union representative can attend to offer you support.
