Residential Cycle Parking

We provides long term secure on-street cycle parking for Glasgow residents.

The shelters are provided by Cyclehoop who supply, install, manage, and maintain the shelters on behalf of the council.  To find a shelter location near you and rent a space please visit Cyclehoop's website

It costs £72 per year or £6 per month to rent a space in a shelter. The rental fee pays for the ongoing management and maintenance of the shelters.

There are 201 shelters located across Glasgow, each with capacity to store 6 bicycles.

The majority of the shelters are placed on road, typically within a parking space, in accordance with the Government's "Designing Streets" policy statement.  Where necessary, the shelters may be placed on the footway in places where they will not impede walking or wheeling.

Scheme Expansion

Since the pilot scheme was launched in 2021 there has been a considerable demand for storage. We are committed to expanding the existing scheme, with more shelters planned for late 2024.

To inform where new shelters are located, you can request a new location on the Cyclehoop Suggest a Location webpage.

Locations for future shelters are identified based upon a multiple-criteria decision analysis, which utilises the number of requests we have received in an area, in addition to factors such as the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation, household density and deliverability.

City Centre Secure Cycle Parking

We provide temporary secure on-street cycle parking for visitors to Glasgow city centre.

The scheme is provided by Cyclehoop who supply, install, manage, and maintain the shelters on behalf of the council.  The Pilot Project has been developed in response to a lack of secure cycle parking in the city centre.

It costs 15p to rent a space for 30 mins in a shelter. This rental fee pays for the ongoing management and maintenance of the shelters.

To get started, please visit Cyclehoop's website.

The app works like a standard parking app. Simply download for free from Google Play or the App Store, create your account and add credit. You can then use the app to find, navigate, book and unlock a parking unit of your choice.

20 shelters are located across the city centre and are easily identifiable with a bike icon on either end. 8 shelters are black in colour and 12 shelters feature the UCI rainbow stripes in celebration of Glasgow hosting the UCI World Championships.

For people with non-standard cycles, a cargo bike shelter is located on the north side of Buchanan Bus Station on Cowcaddens Road. The cycle parking facilities are at street level to be easily accessible.

Policy 50 of Glasgow Transport Strategy (PDF) [4MB] (opens new window) Policy Framework states that the Council will work to ensure new sustainable transport interventions do not take up pavement space where possible, do not create new hazards for the movement of pedestrians or those with mobility difficulties, and roadspace reallocation is considered first and foremost with a clear rationale set out why this cannot be achieved if relevant.

Most of the units are placed on the road in accordance with Policy 50 and displace car parking spaces by approximately half a car length. This minimises the impact on pedestrians and the introduction of objects that may be visually dominant within the street scape, obstruct visibility or create blind spots. Where necessary, the shelters are placed on the footway and do not impede walking or wheeling.
