Glasgow City Council's response to attacks in Paris
Published: 18 January 2016
Following the deeply-distressing incidents in Paris The Lord Provost of Glasgow, Councillor Sadie Docherty, and the Leader of Glasgow City Council, Councillor Frank McAveety, said:
"Our hearts are broken. This would be a horrible tragedy wherever it happened but to see it happen in one of the world's greatest cities, which has already suffered so much this year, is almost too much to bear.
"France has always been a great friend to Scotland and Glasgow. The victims of this outrage were ordinary people simply enjoying their lives and this could have happened in any city in the world. All of the people of Paris are in our thoughts and prayers.
"We know these attacks are nothing to do with any true faith and we know the people of Glasgow will stand united in the face of anyone who tries to terrorise or divide us."
As a mark of respect and support for the people of Paris and France, their national flag is flying at half-mast from the roof of the City Chambers. There will also be a lighting projection on to the City of Glasgow College building.
The LUCI (Lighting Urban Community International) City Under the Microscope Conference has been taking place in Glasgow this week. As a mark of respect and solidarity to friends and colleagues from the LUCI organisation based in Lyon, and to the people of France, the planned lighting projection this evening of "I Love You" will now be presented in French with a backdrop of colours representing the colours of the Tricolore.
The façade of the City of Glasgow College building on North Hanover Street will feature this projection, created by Glasgow-born artist Craig Morrison in collaboration with German artists Hartung and Trenz. The site specific artwork is an animated sequence that will project words across the 50metres on the building. The projection will be shown from 5.30pm to 11pm this evening.
