Aims and Principles
What is the Women's Network?
We have established the Women's Network in support of our Equality & Diversity Commitments Opens new window which include advancing equality of opportunity and raising employees' awareness of equality and diversity at work.
The group is a peer support network to enable employees with an interest in this area to share insights and experiences. The group was launched in February 2016 under the name 'Lean In' with Annemarie O'Donnell, Chief Executive, as guest speaker. In 2022 the network decided to rename themselves the Glasgow City Council Women's Network.
Women's Network Principles
It's important to have shared values so that everyone knows what's expected of them and what you can expect from other people. We have developed our Women's Network Principles outlining our aims and the importance of confidentiality, communication and commitment.
Network Aims
The Glasgow City Council (GCC) Women's Network is a women's networking group that shares and promotes the common theme of peer support and inclusivity. This group meets frequently and is actively encouraged to exchange ideas, information and experiences relating to gender issues, women in the workplace and women in society.
The GGC Women's Network has been established as part of the Diversity Champions Framework in support of our Equality and Diversity Commitments of:
- Eliminating discrimination, harassment and victimisation.
- Advancing equality of opportunity and improving the diversity make up of our workforce.
- Raising employees' awareness of equality, diversity and the inclusivity of our organisation.
The sole purpose of the network is to provide a space for those who have an interest in creating a peer support network, to have a collective open discussion and brainstorm surrounding relevant topics. It is crucial that the environment of these networking groups is supportive and inclusive of all groups of society, in order to promote transparency and safety in sharing these insights and discussions.
Communication
Members have an opportunity to express their honest views, ideas and experiences, which should be respected and not judged by any member. It is important to listen when others are talking and divulging information, so there can be collective and or/ individual responses/solutions. Promoting a safe space for members to have an open discussion will allow for a diverse insight into the ongoing issues.
Subsequently, this open dialogue of knowledge, ideas and experience can be powerful in terms of generating wider change.
Commitment
Members are entitled and encouraged to participate in all discussions, remaining mindful of differing views. This is a non-pressuring and non-judgemental environment, whereby members are not in any obligation to contribute, only when they feel comfortable to do so. Questions, discussions and reflections on all topics highlighted at the time, are welcomed and encouraged.
Attendance is optional; however, we want to ensure all members have an equal opportunity to be a part of all discussions. Network members are encouraged to attend as many meetings and events as possible and network coordinators will work to make all events accessible and address any barriers to members attending.
