Our Commuter Champions - Cycling

Cycling is an efficient form of active travel that can provide many benefits such as improving your fitness and helping your mental wellbeing whilst also helping to protect the environment.

Glasgow has seen a significant increase in people cycling in recent years through the introduction of our city centre cycle hire and residential cycle parking schemes and our City Network of segregated cycling routes across the city.

Whilst we are aware that cycling sounds an easy way to travel, there are key barriers to making it your mode of active travel such as, safety concerns, knowing how to ride a bike and where to buy or purchase your bike.

You told us...

"36% of our staff told us that they would consider cycling to work if safe cycle routes were provided"

"18% of you aged 16-34 said that you would consider switching to cycling if you owned your own bike"

"15% of you who currently use the Subway would consider cycling to work if there was access to a bike hire scheme"

"36% of you told us that you would consider cycling to work if safe cycle routes were provided"

Measures we will...

Continue to deliver our City Network of 270km of city segregated cycling routes - to provide everyone with a safe and accessible dedicated cycling network.

Work with CHR to finalise and appoint our new Cycle to Work scheme in 2025 - which will include new financial incentives to help purchase electric bikes to meet staff feedback.

Roll out our newly serviced corporate pool of bicycles in Spring 2025 - so that they continue to be safe and well maintained for your use when required.

Continue to roll out a series of agreed cycle awareness courses for all staff from Spring 2025 - this will include bike maintenance and cycle tuition to help you feel more confident in taking to two wheels.

Use the findings of our recent office and depot audit to develop a programme for introducing more cycling facilities, when budget appropriate - such as cycle parking facilities and washing and changing facilities.

Provide you with key travel information local to your place of work - to help you find suitable safe cycling routes and distances to local public transport locations.

Consider the cost to the council for staff discounts on the next City Wide Cycle Hire Scheme - produce a business case for review.

To register for cycle maintenance and cycle tuition please email Rabeya Begum on Outlook.
