Enterprise
What is Enterprise?
Enterprise offers opportunities for young people to harness and apply entrepreneurial skills from Primary to post-16 learning and / or employment. Working with Jobs Business Glasgow, Young Enterprise Scotland Bad Idea and Glasgow Social Enterprise Network, young people are encouraged to run their own business in school. Examples of Enterprise include P6 Christmas Fairs and S6 being involved in the YES Company programmes. Employers are encouraging enterprise skills within their workforce as a means to help improve efficiency and customer reach.
To support enterprising approaches to learning and supporting the development of enterprise skills in schools centre on closely linking school based activity with labour market needs and opportunities.
Enterprise-focused activity will begin with young people at primary school and into secondary education with the aim of increasing the number of young people in Glasgow schools who have experience of enterprise-related activity. In partnership with Glasgow Social Enterprise Network and Young Enterprise Scotland Website aim to offer In-service to staff as well as linking with businesses. Schools not engaged will be targeted.
Enterprise will concentrate on developing entrepreneurial skills especially linked to Social Enterprise - both in terms of personal effectiveness, motivation, creativity etc. and more technical skills such as financial capability and business planning.
Enterprise will create and/or develop partnerships with key agencies that support young people into business to accommodate smooth and positive transitions from school for young people who choose to move directly into business or enterprise related further learning. As part of this work the ESP Team will particularly support the Council's commitment towards the development of social and co-operative enterprise.
What is the Culinary Excellence programme?
The Culinary Excellence (CE) programme is a 12 week educational programme offered by the Employment & Skills Partnership Team (ESPT) within Glasgow City Councils Education Services. The programme has been established for 19 years and is recognised by employers and further education establishments citywide with continuous development to clear pathways between school, further education and employment
The programme is offered to Glasgow schools senior hospitality students studying at national 5 level and gives them the opportunity to gain the relevant practical and soft skills to enable them to prepare and host a 3 course lunch or dinner event to invited guests.
Schools are partnered with a high profile Glasgow restaurant/hotel and are trained by award winning chefs and front of house teams. Each student spends equal time in both areas (kitchen/front of house) to give them an insight into both areas of service.
Chefs & front of house teams identify which students have enhanced their skills in both areas of service, before appointing them to their roles for their final event where they will be presented with awards on completion.
During the programme the students are invited to industry related visits/events e.g.
- City Markets (Glasgow) where they experience the fruit, fish & flower market.
- Lord Provost invites students to work front of house at the City Chambers for the Senior Citizen Christmas lunches.
- Glasgow Trail (tour of City centre venues including skills challenges)
- Entry into annual Trades House school competition for culinary skills.
- Visit to 5* hotel to observe daily hotel operation and engage in employability ready workshops.
- "Kick-Start" winter leaver programme (Springboard)
The Culinary Excellence programme has formed and maintained various partnerships with industry leaders over the years and provides many opportunities to our young people within further education, training and employment which students are continuously encouraged to apply.
Glasgow business partners have provided and continue to provide our young people with an invaluable experience of the hospitality industry over the years and show immense support and dedication to the future of Glasgow's young talent within the industry.
What are Prince's Trust programmes in schools?
From August 2016 The Prince's Trust Scotland will begin delivery of Achieve, a flexible programme that brings together the best of our existing XL and Fairbridge under 16 programmes which have been established in Glasgow schools for many years. Achieve will represent an improved offer for young people in education.
Education should prepare young people for the positive futures they want, but many young people experience issues with attendance, attainment and motivation. This puts them at risk of underachieving or being excluded, and holds them back from achieving their full potential. The Prince's Trust Achieve programme will help young people get back on track and engage and succeed in education.
How it works
