Inspiring Examples of Stalled Spaces Projects

A list of selected past Stalled Spaces projects promoting community-led innovative temporary uses of stalled or under utilised open spaces in Glasgow.

Includes a wide range of projects, from community gardens and growing projects to art and performance spaces.

Parkhead Community Garden

Local Parkhead residents and community organisations worked together to set up a new community garden off Tollcross Road in Parkhead.

The garden, developed in collaboration with the Grow Green with Glasgow's East End project, Parkhead Housing Association and Glasgow Regeneration Agency, is a space for local people to grow their own food and creates a vibrant community resource with all the support and advice they need to get things growing.

Shettleston Community Growing Project

Shettleston Community Growing Project (SCGP) was set up in 2009 by local people who wished to grow food for themselves and their families. With assistance from Shettleston Housing Association and Glasgow City Council a suitable site was identified, and funding was secured from the Scottish Government's Climate Challenge Fund to turn the derelict and unloved space into an attractive and productive community allotment.

Many Hands Community Garden, Maryhill

Maryhill Integration Network is a charitable organisation, founded to relieve the suffering, hardship and distress of refugees and immigrants in Glasgow. The group, assisted by Stalled Spaces, developed a garden space in a disused courtyard within the grounds of the Maryhill Community Centre.

This outdoor space was designed to support the development of projects that engage communities through participatory activities focusing on environmental awareness, sustainable living and community cohesion.

Ibrox Flower Field

Elderpark Housing Association worked with the local community to transform a derelict plot in Hinshelwood Drive, Govan, into a community facility. After getting permission from Glasgow City Council for the temporary use of the space, the gaps site that had previously been used as a dumping ground was cleaned and planted with grass and flowers.

Castlemilk Youth Complex Cycle Cinema

The group received Stalled Spaces funding to create a temporary arts project based on cycling located on an area of disused land adjacent to the Youth Complex. Inspired by the adjacent Commonwealth Games 2014 venue, of Cathkin Braes Mountain Bike Trail site, the group had activities which included pop up sculptures, outdoor cycling education, family event spaces, animation drawing skills, pop up park, green gym/outdoor exercise, wild flower meadow and raised beds/growing spaces.

Govanhill Baths Peace Garden

The objective of the project was to transform the underused 'Peace Garden' into a major community attraction with the development of two environmental art works. The project redesigned the area and produced and installed, with the support of local people and the RSPB, a permanent 30 foot bird hotel art installation featuring 30 individual upcycled bird houses along with large vibrant bottle top mosaic panels made with local primary school children. These installations have transformed the site into a major community art and wildlife area.

The Bothy, Speirs Wharf

In 2012 The Bothy Project turned a vacant space by the canal in Glasgow into a wildflower garden with a shipping container bothy to create an alternative outdoor performance and events space. The garden hosted a series of art residencies and events up until September 2013 when it closed its gates for good to make way for a student housing development.

Pollokshields Playhouse

Initiated to generate discussion about the form of public spaces within our community, Pollokshields Playhouse is a grassroots project that seeks to connect people with under-used public space. Through the temporary animation of a local stalled site the project provides a unique opportunity for testing new possibilities for the future of Pollokshields.

Square Yard Garden, Langside

A growing space in an urban landscape - Square Yard is a reclaimed piece of land which is being developed for the community to enable people to learn about growing food and eating well. Just across the road from Finn's Place and adjacent to David Cargill Centre - behind the big green gate.

Growing Project by St. Paul's Youth Forum, Blackhill

A growing project developed by local youth in the under utilised open space behind the Saint Paul's Parish Church. So far the project has a small growing space, few hens, a fruit orchard and a pizza oven, supporting healthy eating habits and easily availability of fresh food. The space also has a bothy-style container for group activities.
